Italy's National Grid Initiative takes the form of an association of institutions under the name Italian Grid Infrastructure (IGI). As of July 2007, the IGI constituting document does not bear official signatures; operationally, however, the institutions at the core of IGI jointly manage one of the largest national production grid infrastructures in Europe: INFN Grid and grid.it.
IGI is expected to be a separate legal entity, recognized by the Italian Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca (Ministry for University and Research).

[edit] Italy's Production Grid
The Italian production Grid consists of about 50 sites, serving 30 Virtual Organizations from areas such as Astronomy, Biology, Computational Chemistry, Earth Observation, Genomics, Geophysics, and High Energy Physics. It offers 1 PB of storage, 4500 CPUs (for 4.5 MSPECint of processing power), and 2.5 Gbps bandwidth.
| Number of users with valid Grid Certificate: | a few hundred |
| Number of sites (Resource Centres): | 50 |
| Number of CPUs: | 3000 |
| Total storage (in TB): | 1 PB |
