NGI Full Name: Cyprus Grid Initiative
Acronym: CyGrid

CyGrid is a collaboration initiated by the University of Cyprus (High Performance Computing system Laboratory, Department of Computer Science) during the academic year 2002. On 2007 three major Cypriot research institutions joined and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a framework for research and academic cooperation.

The goal of this initiative is to promote and support the establishment of a National Grid Infrastructure and the access of Cypriot researchers and institutions to European Grid Infrastructures, such as EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE).

[edit] Objectives

In particular, CyGrid seeks to:

  • Organize a National Support Centre for Grid Operations.
  • Organize Training and Technology Transfer Activities for the uptake of Grid technologies.
  • Promote the Development and Commercialisation of Grid Services.
  • Organize National and Regional Dissemination Activities.
  • Provide Cypriot Researchers with Access to the European Grid Infrastructure.
  • Invite national Academic and Research organizations to participate in the initiative.

[edit] Operations

To promote its goals, CyGrid has established and operates:

  • Two Resource Centers, hosted in the University of Cyprus and in the University of Nicosia (previously Intercollege), and connected to the European Grid Infrastructure of EGEE.
  • CyGridCA, the CyGrid Certification Authority, a member of the EUGridPMA, the European Policy Management Authority for Grid Authentication in e-Science. CyGridCA provides X.509 certificates to individuals and institutional resources for identification and authentication purposes before they engage on Grid-related activities.

[edit] Coordination

The activities and operations of CyGrid are coordinated by:

  • The Scientific Committee, comprising representatives from all institutions and/or research groups that contribute resources to CyGrid.
  • The User Forum, comprising users of CyGrid resources and application developers.
  • The SysAdmin Forum, which comprises system administrators of Cypriot resource centers.
